Personal objectives: 100%
The first game has a big place in my heart, I discovered it during a rough year of my life and it pretty much helped me hold on.
It was my personal "don't you dare go hollow" phase.
So like every HK fan around, I couldn't wait for the sequel!
For the good part
- It's a gorgeous game. The sprite work is amazing, the game is very well polished in terms of visual.
- Lot of ennemy variety.
- The bosses are cool, none of them feel redondant.
- The music is phenomenal. I didn't have a "City of tears" kind of moment, but the score is really good. ("Cogwork dancers" and "Cogwork Core" are probably my two favorite songs, but the whole soundtrack is good).
- Team Cherry know what they are doing when it comes to metroidvania and Act 1 and Act 2 of the game were peak for that.
- 20 bucks for a game this size? What a bargain!
For the bad part
- Can we talk about the difficulty of the game? The first game was hard, but it was progressive. In Silksong you are very VERY quickly thrown into the lion's den.
And I beat a lot of bosses before the day one patch, who nerfed some of them.
Every bosses does 2 damages per hit(which was endgame mobs/bosses privilege in HK). Spikes were doing the same pre-patch! Holy sh*t! Why?
- Too many flying ennemy! With NBA level of aim for some of them(Shoutout to the Flintflame Flyers who made my life a living hell to the point it was my profile picture on several social medias)
- Too many gauntlets. It feels like artificial difficulty! And a lot of them happened BEFORE bosses! The Court of craws is an exception, it was awesome.
- Speaking of bosses: Too many adds!
- For me, Act 3 was not as good as the other two. Except for some hidden zone, you don't do much exploration anymore.
You take a quest then fight a boss. Rinse and repeat.
Don't get me wrong, bosses are amazing, but the better part of metroidvania is the exploration imo.
That's why when I discovered in act 3, that an NPC that I met once was the key to a whole (very good) area, I was pissed! I discovered everything and you only been giving me quests and bosses game! How was I supposed to find that place without hints !
- The charm system in HK felt less restrictive. And all crests aren't made equally(Im looking at you, shaman crest and your awful healing ability!)
- Don't lock valuable items behind minigame. Especially when said items are REQUIRED for the 100% completion run!
Conclusion
It sounds like I had a bad time playing this game, but not at all! The good parts are very good and the "bad" parts very subjectives but notable for a casual player such as me.
It was an amazing game, I loved it. But it can be very hard and frustrating.
It's like spicy food: Either you keep eating until you get use to it and acquiere a taste for it OR you don't like this much peppers in your dishes and you don't end your plate.
Me? I love spices.
Time to get all trophies maybe?
